Valencia yields a draw in additions to Lille; Chelsea lead Group H | Gaucho
Valencia let out the victory against Lille away from home (1-1) by conceding a goal from the hosts in extra time, this Wednesday in Group H of the Champions League.
The Spaniards had the victory thanks to a goal from Russian Denis Cheryshev in the second half and with that they had their way open towards qualifying for the round of 16.But Jonathan ikone, in added time (90 + 5), decreed the tie.
Valencia dominated at the start of the match, but after the first 15 minutes came Lille's dangerous moves, with good saves from Valencia goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.
Although the French team deserved to open the scoring, it was the Spaniards who got the advantage through Cheryshev (62) in a counterattack. But Ikoné equalized in the last seconds with a half-height shot inside the box.
With this result, Valencia took four points from three games and is two behind Ajax and Chelsea, while Lille is the last with just one.Earlier the English team won the Ajax by 1-0 away from home with a Belgian Michy Batshuayi goal.
When everything seemed to suggest that the match would end in a draw with the attackers failing to submit, Batshuayi took advantage of a low pass and fired a shot that ended up in the back of the Dutch team's net.
The Dutch, who had beaten Lille and Valencia 3-0, paid dearly on Wednesday for their lack of aim, in a match that brought danger to Spanish goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga at times.
The Ajax players celebrated a goal on 35 minutes, scored by Quincy Promes and initially validated by the referee. But, after consulting the VAR, it was canceled due to impediment.Chelsea, with orange and black uniform, leaned on his defensive solidity to resist until the end of the match.
The English had their best chances in the counterattacks. Ajax's Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana shone when he saved a shot from Mason Mount in the 14th minute. In the remainder of the match, the best chances were created by the Amsterdam team and Kepa had a busy night.
In two weeks, the two teams will face each other again, this time at London's Stamford Bridge.
In that game, Ajax will not be able to count on their fans, vetoed by UEFA as a punishment for the damage caused during the game won in Valencia.- Games on Wednesday and classification of Group H of the Champions League:
